Holy Week

This activity is a religious commemoration in which the Catholic Andean syncretism manifests itself.

 

Today begins the Holy Week in Cusco “Palm Sunday” day in what we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus in the city of Jerusalem riding on a donkey which is acclaimed receiving by the crowd palm leaves in his hand, these leaves represent the triumph, joy and victory is for this reason that the masses of palm Sunday are made very early in the morning, where the faithful come bearing these palms with olive leaves or even thorns in the form cross, brought from the Cusco jungle and the coast, which are blessed and Cusquenian families have the tradition of hanging behind its doors.

Easter is considered as one of the most important events in the Catholic calendar and Christian world, being commemorated the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ throughout the Catholic world. In Cusco, this religious festival takes different expressions according to the tradition and local customs, giving it a unique experience.

WHEN IS IT CELEBRATED?

The Holy Week in Cusco is held between the second half of March and the first week of April, as such date being movable, not fixed.

HOW IS THE HOLY WEEK IN CUSCO?

THE LORD OF THE EARTHQUAKES or “TAYTACHA OF EARTHQUAKES”

The devotion of the Cusquenians that are in the “Taytacha of Tremors” dates back to a serie of events happened previously.

All Cusquenian people remember the 31 March, 1650, it happened at about 02:00 p.m. that of when in the city of Cusco experienced one of the most feared and prolonged quakes in its history. The earthquake not only awakened to the nature was asleep, streams, valleys, but also cusquenian parishioners.

The telluric movements periodically shook the city every hour, the people took to the streets shouting fear and despair, panic took life in every corner .. Some men just as between birds and sorrows seeking reconciliation with others.

THE LORD OF THE TREMORS shows in his face a grave and sad gesture, which in its procession is picking up in each of his steps the cry of the faithful.
